Some games, like crayon physics, are driven by experimenting with a cool mechanic and only later finding a setting for that mechanic.
Pour a glass of water. Stir it and slosh it around. Drop a light object in it and watch how it floats. Drop a heavy object it and watch it sink. Consider the mechanics of how liquids flow.
Little kids know that water on its own is a fun toy and can be amused for hours pouring it from one container to another.
Design a game which uses fluid dynamics as its core mechanic.
